He begins an affair with the beautiful but married Isabelle Azaire, wife of his host. The first is 1910 Amiens, in France, where the fluent French speaker young Stephen is on business, gathering information on the textile industry. The story is essentially that of a 20-year-old Englishman Stephen Wraysford, set over three differing time periods. It is a stand-alone book, although forms the middle part of the authors French Trilogy (Girl at the Lion D’Or and Charlotte Gray being the first & third, respectively). It is now published about 25 years, but the story has stayed with me since I first read it almost 20 years ago, when I found Faulks while looking for a new writer to explore. This is more than just a WWI book – it is also a story of discovery, love and family. ![]()
